Been involved in a project recently that has required some digging around in the murky world of user-generated content. Of particular interest was the remixing of stuff developed by other people. And this one here is a corker.
So in all their full, glorious awfulness, I give you the Kersal Massive (parental advisory warning: bad language will ensue shortly). It's just to bad you know it has to be serious...
And maybe it's because the KM ARE so bad that a heap of remixes, mashups, pastiches, homages and general piss takes have followed on so quickly (in only a short space of time - the earliest original posting I can find is only a month ago).
There's loads on Youtube. This is one of my faves (the sock puppets really do capture the level of threat the boys inspire!)...
Here's a few more (KM1, KM2, KM3, KM4, KM5)
But there's some more professional stuff as well, with a number of full length remix tracks here (you need to scroll down the page for the full list)
And my personal favourite: a bunch of twenty-somethings who were bothered enough to set up a Myspace site where they claim to be the original Kersal Massive, who've been ripped off. Maybe they are. But the bad lip synching, 15 year olds voices, and tongue-in-cheek chavtastic nature of the site suggests otherwise.
The KM have even got a fashion following: if you fancy a KM hoodie, you can get one.
It really does bring into stark relief the challenges that face anyone involved in the world of comms today: it just ain't how it used to be. We have to make the new rules work for us, or give up and go home. And remember, we've got to engage people who are having more than enough fun thank you very much developing and sharing their own content.
As the KM boys themselves would say: 'we don't f$%k about' (catch phrase in the making anyone? 11,000 results on Google can't be wrong!!)
