Actually the previous post reminded me of Prince giving away his new album for free in the UK with the Mail on Sunday. Which worked very well for him.
His previous album sold circa 80,000 copies, and he made about £150k.
Going this route, he got his product into the hands of millions of people (without the need for promotional costs or expensive packaging - just a cardboard slip sleeve). And the Mail got a huge spike in sales as all the Prince fans, and those (like me) just interested in getting his album for £1.40 steamed in.
Which is probably why they were happy to pay north of £300k for the privilege...doubling cash in the back pocket for his Royal Purpleness.
Everyone leaves the party with a balloon basically.
I think all these new models in the music industry are really interesting. And you just wonder what would happen if they were adopted elsewhere.
