There is a modicum of amusing irony in my nicking this quote on uniqueness in comedy from John's blog...
"The secret is to be unique so that they can't steal from you: That's what comics should think about: it's not the jokes; it's about themselves. It's about your personality. They can't appropriate 'you'."
Lessons for us: yes great product and service is vital - without that you have nothing, much as a comedian with no jokes is, well, no joke.
But product and service is also something that can be matched, beaten or offered cheaper. It's rarely sustainable.
Only the passions, beliefs and personality that underpin and drive your business offer a truly unique, ownable and sustainable proposition - why I want to do business with you rather than someone else.
